An air fryer is not a low-power appliance in the same way as a kettle or toaster. Most models use a powerful heating element and fan, often rated at around 1,400W to 2,000W. When an air fryer may not be the cheapest option

An air fryer is not automatically the best choice for every meal. Capacity is the biggest trade-off. A compact basket is ideal for one or two portions, but preparing food in several batches can remove much of the advantage. If you need to cook a family roast, a large lasagne or several trays of food, a conventional oven may be more efficient overall because it handles everything at once.

Dual-drawer air fryers offer more room and flexibility. They can cook two foods at different temperatures or timings, which is useful for a main and side dish. However, using both drawers means running more heating power. They can still be convenient and economical compared with heating a large oven for a modest meal, but the difference is smaller than when using one drawer for a single portion.

Other appliances deserve consideration too. A microwave is usually the most efficient option for reheating leftovers, steaming vegetables or cooking certain quick meals. A slow cooker can use relatively little electricity over several hours, particularly for soups, stews and pulled meats. For boiling water, use a kettle rather than heating a pan from cold on an electric hob.

The most economical appliance is usually the one that cooks the right quantity of food with the least unnecessary heating.

How to get lower running costs from your air fryer

Good habits make more difference than chasing small differences between models. Start by choosing an air fryer size that suits how you actually cook. A smaller unit can be economical for couples or quick lunches, while a larger basket or dual-drawer model can be a better fit for families who would otherwise cook in batches.

Avoid overcrowding the basket. Food needs space for hot air to circulate. A packed basket may need extra time, repeated shaking and uneven cooking, which reduces the convenience and the potential saving. For best results, cook a sensible layer of food and shake or turn it when the recipe requires it.

Preheat only when it genuinely improves the result. Many foods cook well without a lengthy preheat, especially frozen chips, vegetables and prepared snacks. Baking, thicker cuts of meat and recipes that rely on a quick initial blast of heat may benefit from a few minutes of preheating. Follow the appliance instructions and adjust once you know how your chosen model performs.

Cooking from frozen can also be practical, but it is worth checking the portion size. A large frozen block of food may cook slowly and unevenly. Separating pieces where possible helps them cook faster, reducing the chance that the appliance runs longer than expected.

It is also worth looking beyond electricity consumption. A model with a clear control panel, dishwasher-safe parts, reliable temperature settings and enough room for your household can save time as well as energy. If an appliance is awkward to clean or too small for the meals you make, it is more likely to sit unused while the oven goes back on.

Air fryers are particularly useful for meals that need a crisp exterior or benefit from quick roasting. Chicken wings, fish fillets, sausages, bacon, wedges, roasted peppers, cauliflower and frozen chips are popular choices. They are also handy for reheating pizza, pastries and leftovers that would turn soft in a microwave.

For a weekday meal, try cooking protein in one drawer and vegetables in the other, then use the oven only when the meal genuinely needs its larger capacity. This approach suits households that want quicker cooking without changing every recipe they enjoy.

The practical answer for everyday kitchens

Air fryers can save electricity when they replace a full-size oven for smaller, faster meals. The saving is strongest when one basket is used efficiently, cooking times are short and there is no need for several batches. They are less compelling for large family dishes, where an oven, microwave or slow cooker may be the better choice.
