How to Reduce Dryer Energy Use and Save at Home

A tumble dryer can be one of the most convenient appliances in the home, especially when school uniforms, bedding or rainy-week laundry need drying quickly. But the longest drying cycles can add noticeably to household electricity use. The good news is that it is usually straightforward to reduce dryer energy use without leaving clothes damp or changing your whole laundry routine.

The biggest savings come from three areas: removing as much water as possible before drying, using the right programme for the load, and keeping the appliance able to move air efficiently. Small adjustments made on every wash soon add up.

How to Reduce Dryer Energy Use Before You Press Start

A dryer is most efficient when it starts with laundry that has already been spun well. Check the care labels first, then use the highest suitable spin speed on your washing machine. A 1,200 or 1,400 rpm spin cycle can remove considerably more water than a lower-speed cycle, meaning the dryer has less work to do.

It may feel quicker to put washing straight into the dryer, but take a minute to separate heavier items. Towels, jeans and hoodies often need longer than lightweight shirts, socks and synthetic fabrics. Drying them together can leave light items over-dried while the heavier pieces are still damp. Running two more suitable loads is often more efficient than extending one mixed cycle.

Give each item a quick shake before loading it. This simple habit reduces bunching, helps fabric circulate and can prevent duvet covers or fitted sheets from trapping smaller garments inside. Better airflow means more even drying and fewer repeat cycles.

Do not overload the drum. A full load is generally more economical than several small loads, but there still needs to be room for laundry to tumble freely. If the drum is packed tightly, warm air cannot circulate properly and drying time rises. As a practical guide, leave enough space to place a hand above the laundry once it is loaded.

Choose the Setting That Matches the Laundry

The programme matters as much as the load size. Many households use one familiar setting for everything, often a high-heat timed programme. It works, but it can use more electricity than necessary and may be harsher on fabrics.

For everyday laundry, use automatic sensor drying where available. Moisture sensors detect when the load has reached the selected dryness level, then stop the cycle rather than continuing for a fixed time. Choose options such as cupboard dry for clothes that will be folded and put away, or iron dry if garments will be ironed while slightly damp.

Timed programmes are useful for a small number of items, but they need more attention. Start conservatively and add a short amount of time only if required. A 90-minute setting does not guarantee better results than a sensor programme - it may simply keep heating clothes that are already dry.

Low-heat and delicate programmes can take longer, yet they are still the right choice for heat-sensitive fabrics. Energy saving should not come at the cost of shrinking a favourite jumper or damaging sportswear. For cottons, towels and bedding, select the appropriate fabric programme instead of automatically choosing the hottest setting.

If your machine offers an eco programme, expect it to run for longer. This can seem counterintuitive, but a longer cycle may use lower heat and manage energy more carefully. The best option depends on the appliance and the load, so check the programme guide supplied with your dryer rather than judging efficiency by cycle length alone.

Keep Airflow Clear for Faster Drying

Poor maintenance is one of the most common reasons a dryer starts taking longer. Every time a load dries, lint, fibres and dust are collected. If they are left in place, airflow is restricted and the machine has to run longer to achieve the same result.

Clean the lint filter after every load. Let it cool if necessary, remove visible lint, and check that the filter sits correctly before starting the next cycle. A filter can also develop a thin coating from detergent or fabric conditioner residue, so wash it gently with warm water occasionally and allow it to dry fully before refitting.

For condenser and heat-pump dryers, empty the water container when it is full. Clean the condenser, heat exchanger or lower filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions. These components vary by model, so avoid using sharp objects or excessive force. A clean machine performs better, and regular care can also help protect its working life.

Ventilated dryers need clear external venting. Check that the hose is not crushed behind the appliance, bent sharply or blocked at the outlet. If warm, damp air cannot escape, clothes will take longer to dry and the laundry area may become humid.

Keep the room around the dryer reasonably ventilated and avoid placing it in a very cold, unheated space where possible. Heat-pump dryers in particular may take longer in low ambient temperatures. There is a balance to strike: the dryer needs airflow, but opening windows wide during very cold weather can make the space less efficient.

Make Better Use of Each Drying Cycle

Dry similar fabrics together and aim for sensible loads. Waiting until you have enough cotton items for one complete load is usually better than drying a few T-shirts at a time. However, do not leave wet washing sitting in the drum for hours, as creasing and odours can make the job harder later.

When weather and space allow, use an indoor airer, outdoor washing line or a combination approach. Air-dry heavier items such as towels or jeans until they are almost dry, then finish them in the tumble dryer for softness. This can shorten the heated part of the cycle while still giving you the finish you want.

Use the dryer’s delay-start feature if it suits your household routine and electricity tariff. Some energy plans offer lower-cost periods at certain times, but only run appliances unattended if the manufacturer’s guidance and your home safety arrangements allow it. The aim is to shift the cost, not to compromise safety.

Remove clothes promptly at the end of the programme. Not only does this reduce creasing, it stops you from running a refresh or wrinkle-release cycle unnecessarily. Fold, hang or place items on hangers straight away, particularly shirts and school clothes.

Consider Dryer Type When Replacing an Older Model

If an older dryer is becoming slow, noisy or unreliable, replacement can be a practical opportunity to cut running costs. The purchase price is only part of the decision. A dryer is used repeatedly over many years, so its efficiency, capacity and programmes deserve just as much attention.

Heat-pump tumble dryers are widely recognised for lower energy use because they reuse warm air rather than heating fresh air in the same way as conventional models. They often cost more upfront and may have longer programme times, but they can be a strong choice for households that dry laundry frequently. Their gentler temperatures can also be kinder to clothes.

Condenser dryers provide flexible placement because they collect moisture in a tank or can be connected to a drain, depending on the model. Vented dryers can be simpler but require suitable external venting. The right choice depends on your available space, installation options, household size and how often you rely on machine drying.

Look beyond headline capacity. A large drum suits family loads, but it is only efficient if you regularly have enough laundry to use it well. Check the energy label, sensor-drying options, filter access, noise level and programme range. Easy maintenance is valuable because a filter that is simple to reach is more likely to be cleaned after every load.

A Simple Routine That Saves Energy

For most households, the best routine is uncomplicated: spin laundry thoroughly, separate heavy and light fabrics, avoid overfilling, select sensor drying, and clean the filter every time. These steps help the dryer finish sooner while giving clothes the care they need.

Drying laundry will always use electricity, particularly during wet weeks and busy family schedules. The practical goal is not to avoid the dryer altogether. It is to make every cycle earn its place - with a clean appliance, a well-prepared load and a setting chosen for the clothes inside.
